Timing belt or timing chain: why check and replace them?

What does the engine timing drive do, when does it need attention and which symptoms matter? A practical guide before a check or replacement at HH Verkstad in Vagnhärad.

What does the timing drive do?

The timing drive keeps the crankshaft and camshafts synchronised so the valves open at the correct time. Engines may use a belt, a chain or a combination. If the drive skips or fails, pistons and valves can collide in many engine designs, causing extensive internal damage.

Timing belts: use the schedule for your engine

A timing belt is a service item. Check the manufacturer’s current instructions for the exact engine, including any age and mileage limits. A schedule for another model year or engine is not automatically suitable for your car.

If there is no reliable record of a previous replacement, investigate the service history and plan the work. A belt that looks intact does not guarantee remaining service life. Do not wait for a warning noise before replacing it.

Timing chains: durable does not mean everlasting

Chains, guides and tensioners can wear. Inadequate lubrication or incorrect oil supply can accelerate chain wear, which makes the correct oil, oil level and servicing important. There is no single replacement interval for all chain-driven engines.

New or recurring rattling, especially during starting, warrants investigation. A warning light, rough running or camshaft/crankshaft correlation fault codes can also justify a check. These symptoms have other possible causes, so diagnosis should come before ordering parts.

Check the complete system

A planned repair involves more than the belt or chain itself. Tensioners, idlers, guides and associated components are assessed against the engine’s repair instructions. If the timing belt drives the water pump, its condition and replacement requirements should be considered during the same job.

Belt-in-oil engines have particular oil specification and inspection requirements. Incorrect oil and fuel dilution can damage the belt material. Follow the engine manufacturer’s procedure; an ordinary visual belt check may not be enough.

When should you arrange a check?

Arrange an assessment if the replacement history is unknown, the service limit is approaching or a new noise appears. If a severe new mechanical noise or a red oil-pressure warning occurs, stop the engine safely and arrange assistance before driving further.

At HH Verkstad we start with your engine variant and service history. Include the registration number, mileage and symptoms in your request so we can plan the appropriate inspection or replacement.
